The Ice Dragon

While I eagerly await the release of The Winds of Winter by George R. R. Martin I have been discovering other works by him. The Ice Dragon is a charming little illustrated children’s book. It follows Adara who is a winter child. She is cold both inside and out which leads her to make some interesting friends. I don’t think it is a spoiler at this point to say that people die in this book because, let’s be honest, it’s George R. R. Martin, but it isn’t anything gruesome or disturbing.

I really enjoyed this book. The story isn’t very original or world shattering, but it is cute, sad, and heartwarming. Also, the art is gorgeous. Most of the illustrations are drawn with winter-y blue lines with little if any other color which is fitting for the story. The drawings are very detailed and many span across both pages. It is worth owning for the art alone, but the story is a very enjoyable and quick read. It fulfills a little of my yearning for the next installment in his A Song of Ice and Fire series.
