Paradise and Elsewhere

Paradise and Elsewhere by Kathy Page is a mystical and lyrical collection of short stories. Unfortunately, the beautiful writing could not save this hit-or-miss collection.

I expected a lot of magical realism from the blurb on the back. It promised whispering trees, skin-changers, and soothsayers. The back cover did not lie, but everything it promised fell short. I wanted so much more from each story. The mystical elements were often not explored to the fullest. Most of the stories felt like they could take place in reality. The stories were too familiar and not strange enough for my tastes. Some were quite dark, but not chillingly so. I was slightly disappointed, but if you aren’t a person who is acquainted with much magical realism you might enjoy this collection more.
